At the risk of stating the obvious, it’s not much use being a search technician if you get lost. Not only does it mean you have one less search technician trying to find the missing person but in a worse case scenario, we have to divert some of the search effort to find them rather than having that resource looking for the missing person. So you really really really need to know how to use a map and compass.
Training is coming thick and fast now as we endeavour to gain all the necessary skills before we are assessed and then are finally qualified to do our part in looking for missing people. This time it was two areas at which I was a complete novice – basic medical training and how to use a radio – properly.
Sadly, some of the people we might be searching for are attracted to water and hence one of the things we need to know is how to search near water. So for us trainees, we had both a theory and a practical session. Water is dangerous stuff and the rule for a search technician is that we never get in it. Once we are trained in searching near water, there are further qualifications we can take that enable us to search in water but that is for another day.
Just a quick update. Whilst not formally part of our training, once a year, we get every single piece of equipment out, check it from top to bottom (including expiration dates) and clean it. As a reward for our hard efforts, this is followed by a barbecue.
