Information about the Team

Lowland Search and Rescue teams exist to search for missing persons or the vulnerable, and items such as evidence in a criminal case.  Searches can be conducted in urban or rural areas and will normally be initiated by the Police.

WILSAR primarily cover the County of Wiltshire, but we also regularly assist neighbouring teams in Hampshire and Berkshire and will assist ANY Search organisation requesting help if at all possible.  We are one of ten teams affiliated to ALSAR, the Association of Lowland Search And Rescue.

The Team consists of approximately 30 members.  All operational members are trained to the standards laid down by ALSAR.  The team has a number ALSAR trained Team Leaders and Search Coordinators.  One of these members is on duty at all times, and will arrange the call out of the team via an SMS system provided by Wiltshire Ambulance Service.  Searches may be managed on the ground by the Police or one of our own Search Coordinators as required.

WILSAR is a Registered Charity and make no charge for their services, with all members being volunteers.  The Team has its own control vehicle, radio communications equipment and other specialist search equipment.

The Team train most weeks, and hold frequent exercises.  This ensures a high state of readiness and professionalism.

All training required to become a member of the Team is provided.  Members are encouraged to develop specialist skills if they wish.

The team has an active social calendar with regular events.

We are always looking for new members who are able to volunteer in any capacity.  The team needs fundraisers and non operational members as well as operational searchers.
